The situation

What has happened

A reserve infantry company has requested Range 4 for field firing with section attacks on 19 and 20 September and has asked to use tracer. The request is at Requested in the bookings system. The Range 4 standing orders set the natures permitted, the range safety officer qualification required and the fire danger conditions under which tracer is not permitted. Target mechanism 12 is isolated with an open work order after a ricochet damaged it. Warren Bird wants the request assessed and either confirmed or returned by Friday, and a pre-use inspection planned for the Saturday morning that takes the isolated mechanism into account.

Your brief. Assess the Range 4 request against the standing orders and the procedure, resolve the tracer question, confirm or return the booking with written reasons, and plan and document the pre-use inspection so the range can be handed to the range safety officer safely on the day.

Evidence guide

The student must show every check in the procedure was made, must not confirm the booking until the range safety officer qualification and the natures are checked, and must give a reasoned decision on tracer tied to fire danger conditions. The inspection plan must address the isolated target mechanism and the letter must state conditions clearly and set the handover arrangements.
